Baby Lucy’s Fresh 48 at Tennova North

There’s something especially meaningful about being invited back into a family’s story.

In 2024, I photographed Lucy’s big sister as a brand-new little person, and now, two years later, I was back at Tennova North in Knoxville to meet Lucy during her very first days of life. Getting to photograph the same family again—this time with one more tiny person added to the mix—is one of my favorite parts of being a photographer.

Fresh 48 sessions are about more than simply documenting what a newborn looks like. They preserve the little details that disappear almost immediately: the hospital bracelet around a tiny wrist, those impossibly small fingers, the sleepy stretches, the brand-new expressions, and the way everyone seems to be figuring out this new version of their family together.

Lucy’s session was a beautiful reminder of just how quickly these early days pass.

A Familiar Family, A Brand-New Baby

One of the sweetest things about photographing a second baby is seeing the difference between returning to a family and meeting them for the first time.

I already knew this family from photographing Lucy’s big sister in 2024, so this session felt like picking up a story I had started a couple of years earlier. Except this time, there was a brand-new chapter being written.

Lucy was still in that wonderful, sleepy newborn stage where every little movement feels worth remembering. There is a particular kind of magic in photographing a baby before they have settled into their routines—when everything is new and parents are still getting to know all of their tiny quirks.

Those are the moments I want families to have forever.

Why Fresh 48 Photos Are Worth It

The first couple of days with a new baby can feel like a blur. There are nurses coming in and out, meals arriving, phone calls to make, family members waiting for updates, and an entirely new human to stare at for hours.

And somewhere in the middle of all of that, the days start slipping away.

That is exactly why I love Fresh 48 photography.

Rather than waiting until you are home and life has already started changing, a Fresh 48 session documents your baby exactly as they were at the beginning. The hospital room, the tiny details, the sleepy faces, and the people who were there to meet them all become part of the story.

Years from now, those photographs won't just show you what Lucy looked like.

They'll take you back to where she began.

Fresh 48 Photography at Tennova North in Knoxville

As an experienced newborn and Fresh 48 photographer serving Knoxville, Oak Ridge, Clinton, and surrounding East Tennessee communities, I am comfortable working in the hospital environment and with brand-new babies.

That experience matters.

Hospital Fresh 48 sessions are not the same as traditional newborn sessions. There isn't a perfectly prepared nursery, a collection of props waiting at home, or unlimited time to get everything just right. We work with the room, the available light, baby's mood, and whatever those first couple of days happen to bring.

My goal is to make the photography part easy.

You don't need to know how to pose your baby, you don't need to know what photographs we should take, and you definitely don't need to worry about entertaining me while you're recovering and getting to know your new little one. I'll guide the session, handle the details, and look for the moments that are easy to miss when you're living them.

The Best Part of Being a Family Photographer

Honestly, photographing Lucy was a little reminder of why I love this job so much.

It's not just about meeting new families.

It's about getting to stay with families.

Sometimes that means photographing a maternity session and then meeting their newborn. Sometimes it means documenting a first birthday and then hearing from them when another baby is on the way. And sometimes, like with Lucy, it means seeing a familiar little face grow into a big sister and then getting to meet the baby who has joined the family.

Those connections are something I never take for granted.

Lucy may have only been a few days old during her Fresh 48 session, but her story had already been connected to mine for two years.

And I have a feeling this won't be the last chapter I get to photograph. I am lucky enough to have returning clients regularly, and I get to do a lifestyle session with both girls at this family's home soon too as well!
